| 1 καὶ ἔφθασεν ὁ μὴν ὁ ἕβδομος καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ ἐν πόλεσιν αὐτῶν καὶ συνήχθη ὁ λαὸς ὡς ἀνὴρ εἷς εἰς Ιερουσαλημ 2 καὶ ἀνέστη Ἰησοῦς ὁ τοῦ Ιωσεδεκ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἱερεῖς καὶ Ζοροβαβελ ὁ τοῦ Σαλαθιηλ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ᾠκοδόμησαν τὸ θυσιαστήριον θεοῦ Ισραηλ τοῦ ἀνενέγκαι ἐ{P'} αὐτὸ ὁλοκαυτώσεις κατὰ τὰ γεγραμμένα ἐν νόμῳ Μωυσῆ ἀνθρώπου τοῦ θεοῦ 3 καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τὸ θυσιαστήριον ἐπὶ τὴν ἑτοιμασίαν αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐν καταπλήξει ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῶν λαῶν τῶν γαιῶν καὶ ἀνέβη ἐ{P'} αὐτὸ ὁλοκαύτωσις τῷ κυρίῳ τὸ πρωὶ καὶ εἰς ἑσπέραν 4 καὶ ἐποίησαν τὴν ἑορτὴν τῶν σκηνῶν κατὰ τὸ γεγραμμένον καὶ ὁλοκαυτώσεις ἡμέραν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἐν ἀριθμῷ ὡς ἡ κρίσις λόγον ἡμέρας ἐν ἡμέρᾳ αὐτοῦ 5 καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ὁλοκαυτώσεις ἐνδελεχισμοῦ καὶ εἰς τὰς νουμηνίας καὶ εἰς πάσας ἑορτὰς τὰς ἡγιασμένας καὶ παντὶ ἑκουσιαζομένῳ ἑκούσιον τῷ κυρίῳ 6 ἐν ἡμέρᾳ μιᾷ τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ ἑβδόμου ἤρξαντο ἀναφέρειν ὁλοκαυτώσεις τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ ὁ οἶκος κυρίου οὐκ ἐθεμελιώθη | 1 And now, for the first time since Israel’s home-coming, it was the seventh month of the year; the people, with one consent, had gathered at Jerusalem. 2 Josue son of Josedec and his brother priests, Zorobabel son of Salathiel and his brother chiefs, must bestir themselves; the God of Israel must have an altar built for him, if the law given by his servant Moses was to be obeyed, by the offering of burnt-sacrifice. 3 No more they dared to do, with hostile nations threatening them all around, than erect God’s altar on its ruined base;[1] here, morning and evening, burnt-sacrifice was offered, 4 and with that daily offering, with the due observance of each day as it came, they held the feast of Tent-dwelling. 5 After that, burnt-sacrifice went on uninterruptedly, on the feast days set apart for the Lord, and on other days, too, when gifts were brought to the Lord out of devotion. 6 From the first day of this seventh month onwards the offering of burnt-sacrifice to the Lord began; and still they had not laid the very foundations of God’s temple. | 1 Jamque venerat mensis septimus, et erant filii Israël in civitatibus suis: congregatus est ergo populus quasi vir unus in Jerusalem. 2 Et surrexit Josue filius Josedec, et fratres ejus sacerdotes, et Zorobabel filius Salathiel, et fratres ejus, et ædificaverunt altare Dei Israël ut offerrent in eo holocautomata, sicut scriptum est in lege Moysi viri Dei. 3 Collocaverunt autem altare Dei super bases suas, deterrentibus eos per circuitum populis terrarum: et obtulerunt super illud holocaustum Domino mane et vespere. 4 Feceruntque solemnitatem tabernaculorum, sicut scriptum est, et holocaustum diebus singulis per ordinem secundum præceptum opus diei in die suo. 5 Et post hæc holocaustum juge, tam in calendis quam in universis solemnitatibus Domini quæ erant consecratæ, et in omnibus in quibus ultro offerebatur munus Domino. 6 A primo die mensis septimi cœperunt offerre holocaustum Domino: porro templum Dei nondum fundatum erat. |

Levites that were above the age of twenty were appointed to hasten on the execution of the divine command, 9 and at the head of these Levites, clansmen of Henadad’s clan, were Josue’s clan and Cedmihel’s (and the men of Juda), insisting that they should give the temple workmen no rest.[2] 10 So at last the masons laid the foundation of the Lord’s temple. | 12 καὶ πολλοὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἱερέων καὶ τῶν Λευιτῶν καὶ ἄρχοντες τῶν πατριῶν οἱ πρεσβύτεροι οἳ εἴδοσαν τὸν οἶκον τὸν πρῶτον ἐν θεμελιώσει αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῦτον τὸν οἶκον ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτῶν ἔκλαιον φωνῇ μεγάλῃ καὶ ὄχλος ἐν σημασίᾳ με{T'} εὐφροσύνης τοῦ ὑψῶσαι ᾠδήν 13 καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ λαὸς ἐπιγινώσκων φωνὴν σημασίας τῆς εὐφροσύνης ἀπὸ τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ κλαυθμοῦ τοῦ λαοῦ ὅτι ὁ λαὸς ἐκραύγασεν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ καὶ ἡ φωνὴ ἠκούετο ἕως ἀπὸ μακρόθεν | 12 Among the priests and Levites and chiefs of clans there were many older men who had seen the earlier temple when it stood built there. In their eyes, that was the Temple,[3] and they cried aloud in lament, while these others shouted and huzza’d for joy. 13 Shouts of folk rejoicing, and cries of folk lamenting, none could tell them apart; it was all a confused uproar of men’s voices, that echoed far away. | 12 Plurimi etiam de sacerdotibus et Levitis, et principes patrum, et seniores, qui viderant templum prius cum fundatum esset, et hoc templum, in oculis eorum, flebant voce magna: et multi vociferantes in lætitia, elevabant vocem. 13 Nec poterat quisquam agnoscere vocem clamoris lætantium, et vocem fletus populi: commistim enim populus vociferabatur clamore magno, et vox audiebatur procul. |
[1] This seems the best account to give of a difficult phrase in the original, ‘They set up the altar of God on its base, because they were afraid of the native population round about’. Fear of their neighbours accounted, not for the rebuilding of the altar, but for the rebuilding of the altar without walls or roof to shelter it; cf. verse 6. In the (uncanonical) book known as III Esdras, the neighbours are represented as coming in and helping to build the altar.
[2] The text of this verse may well be corrupt, but cannot be restored with certainty.
[3] Or possibly, ‘And now, before their eyes, this (new) temple had been founded’. The Hebrew text is difficult to reconstruct; it seems to run, ‘There were many who had seen the earlier temple. And when it was founded (or, when he founded it), this temple, before their eyes, (they were) weeping with a loud voice, and many with a shout with joy to raise the voice’.
