1 Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ τοῦ ἱεροῦ ἐπορεύετο, καὶ προσῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπιδεῖξαι αὐτῷ τὰς οἰκοδομὰς τοῦ ἱεροῦ: 2 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: οὐ βλέπετε ταῦτα πάντα; ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, οὐ μὴ ἀφεθῇ ὧδε λίθος ἐπὶ λίθον, ὃς οὐ καταλυθήσεται. 3 καθημένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τοῦ ὄρους τῶν ἐλαιῶν προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ κατ' ἰδίαν λέγοντες: εἰπὲ ἡμῖν, πότε ταῦτα ἔσται, καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον τῆς σῆς παρουσίας καὶ συντελείας τοῦ αἰῶνος; 4 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: βλέπετε μή τις ὑμᾶς πλανήσῃ. 5 πολλοὶ γὰρ ἐλεύσονται ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί μου λέγοντες: ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ Χριστός, καὶ πολλοὺς πλανήσουσιν. 6 μελλήσετε δὲ ἀκούειν πολέμους καὶ ἀκοὰς πολέμων: ὁρᾶτε μὴ θροεῖσθε: δεῖ γὰρ γενέσθαι, ἀλλ' οὔπω ἐστὶν τὸ τέλος. 7 ἐγερθήσεται γὰρ ἔθνος ἐπὶ' ἔθνος καὶ βασιλεία ἐπὶ βασιλείαν, καὶ ἔσονται λιμοὶ καὶ σεισμοὶ κατὰ τόπους: 8 πάντα δὲ ταῦτα ἀρχὴ ὠδίνων. 9 τότε παραδώσουσιν ὑμᾶς εἰς θλῖψιν καὶ ἀποκτενοῦσιν ὑμᾶς, καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου. 10 καὶ τότε σκανδαλισθήσονται πολλοὶ καὶ ἀλλήλους παραδώσουσιν καὶ μισήσουσιν ἀλλήλους: 11 καὶ πολλοὶ ψευδοπροφῆται ἐγερθήσονται καὶ πλανήσουσιν πολλούς: 12 καὶ διὰ τὸ πληθυνθῆναι τὴν ἀνομίαν ψυγήσεται ἡ ἀγάπη τῶν πολλῶν. 13 ὁ δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος οὗτος σωθήσεται. 14 καὶ κηρυχθήσεται τοῦτο τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς βασιλείας ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ οἰκουμένῃ εἰς μαρτύριον πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, καὶ τότε ἥξει τὸ τέλος. | 1 Then Jesus left the temple, and was going on his way, when his disciples came up to shew him the view of the temple building. 2 Do you see all this? he said to them. Believe me, there will not be a stone left on another in this place, it will all be thrown down. 3 Afterwards, while he was sitting down on mount Olivet, the disciples came to him privately, and said, Tell us, when will this be? And what sign will be given of thy coming, and of the world being brought to an end?[1] 4 Jesus answered them, Take care that you do not allow anyone to deceive you. 5 Many will come making use of my name; they will say, I am Christ, and many will be deceived by it. 6 And you will hear tell of wars, and rumours of war; see to it that you are not disturbed in mind; such things must happen, but the end will not come yet. 7 Nation will rise in arms against nation, kingdom against kingdom, and there will be plagues and famines and earthquakes in this region or that; 8 but all this is but the beginning of travail. 9 In those days, men will give you up to persecution, and will put you to death; all the world will be hating you because you bear my name; 10 whereupon many will lose heart, will betray and hate one another. 11 Many false prophets will arise, and many will be deceived by them; 12 and the charity of most men will grow cold, as they see wickedness abound everywhere; 13 but that man will be saved who endures to the last. 14 This gospel of the kingdom must first be preached all over the world, so that all nations may hear the truth; only after that will the end come. | 1 Et egressus Jesus de templo, ibat. 15 Ὅταν οὖν ἴδητε τὸ βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ Δανιὴλ τοῦ προφήτου ἑστὸς ἐν τόπῳ ἁγίῳ, ὁ ἀναγινώσκων νοείτω, 16 τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τὰ ὄρη, 17 ὁ ἐπὶ τοῦ δώματος μὴ καταβάτω ἆραι τὰ ἐκ τῆς οἰκίας αὐτοῦ, 18 καὶ ὁ ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ μὴ ἐπιστρεψάτω ὀπίσω ἆραι τὸ ἱμάτιον αὐτοῦ. 19 οὐαὶ δὲ ταῖς ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσαις καὶ ταῖς θηλαζούσαις ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις. 20 προσεύχεσθε δὲ ἵνα μὴ γένηται ἡ φυγὴ ὑμῶν χειμῶνος μηδὲ σαββάτῳ: 21 ἔσται γὰρ τότε θλῖψις μεγάλη οἵα οὐ γέγονεν ἀπ' ἀρχῆς κόσμου ἕως τοῦ νῦν οὐδ' οὐ μὴ γένηται. 22 καὶ εἰ μὴ ἐκολοβώθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι ἐκεῖναι, οὐκ ἂν ἐσώθη πᾶσα σάρξ: διὰ δὲ τοὺς ἐκλεκτοὺς κολοβωθήσονται αἱ ἡμέραι ἐκεῖναι. 23 τότε ἐάν τις ὑμῖν εἴπῃ: ἰδοὺ ὧδε ὁ Χριστός, ἤ, ὧδε, μὴ πιστεύσητε: 24 ἐγερθήσονται γὰρ ψευδόχριστοι καὶ ψευδοπροφῆται, καὶ δώσουσιν σημεῖα μεγάλα καὶ τέρατα, ὥστε πλανῆσαι, εἰ δυνατόν, καὶ τοὺς ἐκλεκτούς. 25 ἰδοὺ προείρηκα ὑμῖν. 26 ἐὰν οὖν εἴπωσιν ὑμῖν: ἰδοὺ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ ἐστίν, μὴ ἐξέλθητε: ἰδοὺ ἐν τοῖς ταμείοις, μὴ πιστεύσητε: 27 ὥσπερ γὰρ ἡ ἀστραπὴ ἐξέρχεται ἀπὸ ἀνατολῶν καὶ φαίνεται ἕως δυσμῶν, οὕτως ἔσται ἡ παρουσία τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. 28 ὅπου ἐὰν ᾖ τὸ πτῶμα, ἐκεῖ συναχθήσονται οἱ ἀετοί. | 15 And now, when you see that which the prophet Daniel called the abomination of desolation, set up in the holy place (let him who reads this, recognize what it means),[2] 16 then those who are in Judaea must take refuge in the mountains; 17 not going down to carry away anything from the house, if they are on the house-top; 18 not going back to pick up a cloak, if they are in the fields. 19 It will go hard with women who are with child, or have children at the breast, in those days; 20 and you must pray that your flight may not be in the winter, or on the sabbath day, 21 for there will be distress then such as has not been since the beginning of the world, and can never be again. 22 There would have been no hope left for any human creature, if the number of those days had not been cut short; but those days will be cut short, for the sake of the elect. 23 At such a time, if a man tells you, See, here is Christ, or, See, he is there, do not believe him. 24 There will be false Christs and false prophets, who will rise up and shew great signs and wonders, so that if it were possible, even the elect would be deceived. 25 Mark well, I have given you warning of it. 26 If they tell you, then, See, he is here, in the desert, do not stir abroad; if they tell you, See, he is there, in hidden places, do not believe them; 27 when the Son of Man comes, it will be like the lightning that springs up from the east and flashes across to the west. 28 It is where the body lies that the eagles will gather.[3] | 15 Cum ergo videritis abominationem desolationis, quæ dicta est a Daniele propheta, stantem in loco sancto, qui legit, intelligat: 16 tunc qui in Judæa sunt, fugiant ad montes: 17 et qui in tecto, non descendat tollere aliquid de domo sua: 18 et qui in agro, non revertatur tollere tunicam suam. 19 Væ autem prægnantibus et nutrientibus in illis diebus! 20 Orate autem ut non fiat fuga vestra in hieme, vel sabbato: 21 erit enim tunc tribulatio magna, qualis non fuit ab initio mundi usque modo, neque fiet. 22 Et nisi breviati fuissent dies illi, non fieret salva omnis caro: sed propter electos breviabuntur dies illi. 23 Tunc si quis vobis dixerit: Ecce hic est Christus, aut illic: nolite credere. 24 Surgent enim pseudochristi, et pseudoprophetæ: et dabunt signa magna, et prodigia, ita ut in errorem inducantur (si fieri potest) etiam electi. 25 Ecce prædixi vobis. 26 Si ergo dixerint vobis: Ecce in deserto est, nolite exire; Ecce in penetralibus, nolite credere. 27 Sicut enim fulgur exit ab oriente, et paret usque in occidentem: ita erit et adventus Filii hominis. 28 Ubicumque fuerit corpus, illic congregabuntur et aquilæ. |
29 Εὐθέως δὲ μετὰ τὴν θλῖψιν τῶν ἡμερῶν ἐκείνων ὁ ἥλιος σκοτισθήσεται καὶ ἡ σελήνη οὐ δώσει τὸ φέγγος αὐτῆς, καὶ οἱ ἀστέρες πεσοῦνται ἀπὸ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ αἱ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται. 30 καὶ τότε φανήσεται τὸ σημεῖον τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐν οὐρανῷ, καὶ τότε κόψονται πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ὄψονται τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐρχόμενον ἐπὶ τῶν νεφελῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ μετὰ δυνάμεως καὶ δόξης πολλῆς. 31 καὶ ἀποστελεῖ τοὺς ἀγγέλους αὐτοῦ μετὰ σάλπιγγος μεγάλης, καὶ ἐπισυνάξουσιν τοὺς ἐκλεκτοὺς αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῶν τεσσάρων ἀνέμων ἀπ' ἄκρων οὐρανῶν ἕως τῶν ἄκρων αὐτῶν. | 29 Immediately after the distress of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will refuse her light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will rock;[4] 30 and then the sign of the Son of Man will be seen in heaven; then it is that all the tribes of the land will mourn,[5] and they will see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of heaven, with great power and glory; 31 and he will send out his angels with a loud blast of the trumpet, to gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.[6] | 29 Statim autem post tribulationem dierum illorum sol obscurabitur, et luna non dabit lumen suum, et stellæ cadent de cælo, et virtutes cælorum commovebuntur: 30 et tunc parebit signum Filii hominis in cælo: et tunc plangent omnes tribus terræ: et videbunt Filium hominis venientem in nubibus cæli cum virtute multa et majestate. 31 Et mittet angelos suos cum tuba, et voce magna: et congregabunt electos ejus a quatuor ventis, a summis cælorum usque ad terminos eorum. |
32 Ἀπὸ δὲ τῆς συκῆς μάθετε τὴν παραβολήν. ὅταν ἤδη ὁ κλάδος αὐτῆς γένηται ἁπαλὸς καὶ τὰ φύλλα ἐκφύῃ, γινώσκετε ὅτι ἐγγὺς τὸ θέρος: 33 οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς, ὅταν ἴδητε πάντα ταῦτα γινώσκετε ὅτι ἐγγύς ἐστιν ἐπὶ θύραις. 34 ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὅτι οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ ἡ γενεὰ αὕτη ἕως ἂν πάντα ταῦτα γένηται. 35 ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ παρελεύσεται, οἱ δὲ λόγοι μου οὐ μὴ παρέλθωσιν. | 32 The fig-tree will teach you a parable; when its branch grows supple, and begins to put out leaves, you know that summer is near; 33 so you, when you see all this come about, are to know that it is near, at your very doors. 34 Believe me, this generation will not have passed, before all this is accomplished. 35 Though heaven and earth should pass away, my words will stand. | 32 Ab arbore autem fici discite parabolam: cum jam ramus ejus tener fuerit, et folia nata, scitis quia prope est æstas: 33 ita et vos cum videritis hæc omnia, scitote quia prope est, in januis. 34 Amen dico vobis, quia non præteribit generatio hæc, donec omnia hæc fiant. 35 Cælum et terra transibunt, verba autem mea non præteribunt. |
36 Περὶ δὲ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης καὶ ὥρας οὐδεὶς οἶδεν, οὐδὲ οἱ ἄγγελοι τῶν οὐρανῶν οὐδὲ ὁ υἱός, εἰ μὴ ὁ πατὴρ μόνος. 37 ὥσπερ γὰρ αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ Νῶε, οὕτως ἔσται ἡ παρουσία τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. 38 ὡς γὰρ ἦσαν ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ταῖς πρὸ τοῦ κατακλυσμοῦ τρώγοντες καὶ πίνοντες, γαμοῦντες καὶ γαμίζοντες, ἄχρι ἧς ἡμέρας εἰσῆλθεν Νῶε εἰς τὴν κιβωτόν, 39 καὶ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν ἕως ἦλθεν ὁ κατακλυσμὸς καὶ ἦρεν ἅπαντας, οὕτως ἔσται καὶ ἡ παρουσία τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. 40 τότε δύο ἔσονται ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ, εἷς παραλαμβάνεται καὶ εἷς ἀφίεται: 41 δύο ἀλήθουσαι ἐν τῷ μύλῳ, μία παραλαμβάνεται καὶ μία ἀφίεται. 42 γρηγορεῖτε οὖν, ὅτι οὐκ οἴδατε ποίᾳ ἡμέρᾳ ὁ κύριος ὑμῶν ἔρχεται. 43 Ἐκεῖνο δὲ γινώσκετε, ὅτι εἰ ᾔδει ὁ οἰκοδεσπότης ποίᾳ φυλακῇ ὁ κλέπτης ἔρχεται, ἐγρηγόρησεν ἂν καὶ οὐκ ἂν εἴασεν διορυχθῆναι τὴν οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ. 44 διὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὑμεῖς γίνεσθε ἕτοιμοι, ὅτι ᾗ οὐ δοκεῖτε ὥρᾳ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἔρχεται. | 36 But as for that day and that hour you speak of, they are known to none, not even to the angels in heaven; only the Father knows them.[7] 37 When the Son of Man comes, all will be as it was in the days of Noe; 38 in those days before the flood, they went on eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the time when Noe entered the ark, 39 and they were taken unawares, when the flood came and drowned them all; so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 One man taken, one left, as they work together in the fields; 41 one woman taken, one left, as they grind together at the mill. 42 You must be on the watch, then, since you do not know the hour of your Lord’s coming. 43 Be sure of this; if the master of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch, and not allowed his house to be broken open. 44 And you too must stand ready; the Son of Man will come at an hour when you are not expecting him. | 36 De die autem illa et hora nemo scit, neque angeli cælorum, nisi solus Pater. 37 Sicut autem in diebus Noë, ita erit et adventus Filii hominis: 38 sicut enim erant in diebus ante diluvium comedentes et bibentes, nubentes et nuptum tradentes, usque ad eum diem, quo intravit Noë in arcam, 39 et non cognoverunt donec venit diluvium, et tulit omnes: ita erit et adventus Filii hominis. 40 Tunc duo erunt in agro: unus assumetur, et unus relinquetur. 41 Duæ molentes in mola: una assumetur, et una relinquetur. 42 Vigilate ergo, quia nescitis qua hora Dominus vester venturus sit. 43 Illud autem scitote, quoniam si sciret paterfamilias qua hora fur venturus esset, vigilaret utique, et non sineret perfodi domum suam. 44 Ideo et vos estote parati: quia qua nescitis hora Filius hominis venturus est. |
45 Τίς ἄρα ἐστὶν ὁ πιστὸς δοῦλος καὶ φρόνιμος, ὃν κατέστησεν ὁ κύριος ἐπὶ τῆς οἰκετείας αὐτοῦ τοῦ δοῦναι αὐτοῖς τὴν τροφὴν ἐν καιρῷ; 46 μακάριος ὁ δοῦλος ἐκεῖνος ὃν ἐλθὼν ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ εὑρήσει οὕτως ποιοῦντα. 47 ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐπὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς ὑπάρχουσιν αὐτοῦ καταστήσει αὐτόν. 48 ἐὰν δὲ εἴπῃ ὁ κακὸς δοῦλος ἐκεῖνος ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ: χρονίζει μου ὁ κύριος, 49 καὶ ἄρξηται τύπτειν τοὺς συνδούλους αὐτοῦ, ἐσθίῃ δὲ καὶ πίνῃ μετὰ τῶν μεθυόντων: 50 ἥξει ὁ κύριος τοῦ δούλου ἐκείνου ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ᾗ οὐ προσδοκᾷ καὶ ἐν ὥρᾳ ᾗ οὐ γινώσκει, 51 καὶ διχοτομήσει αὐτὸν, καὶ τὸ μέρος αὐτοῦ μετὰ τῶν ὑποκριτῶν θήσει: ἐκεῖ ἔσται ὁ κλαυθμὸς καὶ ὁ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων. | 45 Which of you, then, is a faithful and wise servant, one whom his master will entrust with the care of the household, to give them their food at the appointed time? 46 Blessed is that servant who is found doing this when his lord comes; 47 I promise you, he will give him charge of all his goods. 48 But if that servant plays him false, and says in his heart, My lord is long in coming, 49 and so falls to beating his fellow servants, to eating and drinking with the drunkards, 50 then on some day when he expects nothing, at an hour when he is all unaware, his lord will come, 51 and will cut him off, and assign him his portion with the hypocrites; where there will be weeping, and gnashing of teeth.[8] | 45 Quis, putas, est fidelis servus, et prudens, quem constituit dominus suus super familiam suam ut det illis cibum in tempore? 46 Beatus ille servus, quem cum venerit dominus ejus, invenerit sic facientem. 47 Amen dico vobis, quoniam super omnia bona sua constituet eum. 48 Si autem dixerit malus servus ille in corde suo: Moram fecit dominus meus venire: 49 et cœperit percutere conservos suos, manducet autem et bibat cum ebriosis: 50 veniet dominus servi illius in die qua non sperat, et hora qua ignorat: 51 et dividet eum, partemque ejus ponet cum hypocritis: illic erit fletus et stridor dentium. |
[1] The question, When the Temple would be destroyed, is answered in the greater part, at least, of verses 4-35. The question, When should the world be brought to an end, is chiefly answered in verse 36.
[2] Dan. 9.27. The Evangelist here gives a hint to the reader, probably indicating that the sign mentioned by Daniel had been recognizably fulfilled when he wrote. But there is no certainty now what event he alludes to.
[3] Our Lord says that at the time when the false prophets arise, it will be easy to answer the question where the danger is coming from, just as it is easy for a man who sees dead carrion to prophesy where the birds will gather. ‘Eagles’ may be an allusion to the standards carried by the Roman armies.
[4] Such words as these were often used, by a metaphor, of the fall of kingdoms or dynasties; Is. 13.10; Ez. 32.7; Jl. 2.10; 3.15.
[5] ‘The land’, or possibly ‘the earth’, but cf. Zach. 12.12.
[6] ‘Angels’; the Greek word used here might also mean ‘messengers’.
