1 ἐγένοντο λογιζόμενοι κόπους καὶ ἐργαζόμενοι κακὰ ἐν ταῖς κοίταις αὐτῶν καὶ ἅμα τῇ ἡμέρᾳ συνετέλουν αὐτά διότι οὐκ ἦραν πρὸς τὸν θεὸν τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν 2 καὶ ἐπεθύμουν ἀγροὺς καὶ διήρπαζον ὀρφανοὺς καὶ οἴκους κατεδυνάστευον καὶ διήρπαζον ἄνδρα καὶ τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ ἄνδρα καὶ τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτοῦ 3 διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ λογίζομαι ἐπὶ τὴν φυλὴν ταύτην κακά ἐξ ὧν οὐ μὴ ἄρητε τοὺς τραχήλους ὑμῶν καὶ οὐ μὴ πορευθῆτε ὀρθοὶ ἐξαίφνης ὅτι καιρὸς πονηρός ἐστιν 4 ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ λημφθήσεται ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς παραβολή καὶ θρηνηθήσεται θρῆνος ἐν μέλει λέγων ταλαιπωρίᾳ ἐταλαιπωρήσαμεν μερὶς λαοῦ μου κατεμετρήθη ἐν σχοινίῳ καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ κωλύσων αὐτὸν τοῦ ἀποστρέψαι οἱ ἀγροὶ ἡμῶν διεμερίσθησαν 5 διὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἔσται σοι βάλλων σχοινίον ἐν κλήρῳ ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ κυρίου | 1 Out upon you, that lie awake over dreams of mischief, schemes of ill, and are up at dawn of day to execute them, soon as your godless hands find opportunity! 2 Covet they house or lands, house or lands by robbery become theirs; ever their oppression comes between a man and his home, a man and his inheritance. 3 And I, too, the Lord says, am devising mischief, mischief against the whole clan of you; never think to shake it off from your necks and walk proudly as of old; ill days are coming. 4 A by-word then they shall make of you, dirge and dole of music raise over you: Stripped, stripped bare! My country’s bounds removed! Come he but once again, that so parcels out our lands, all is lost to me! 5 Trust me, when lands are allotted among the Lord’s people, never shall one of yonder clan have rope to throw.[1] | 1 Væ qui cogitatis inutile, et operamini malum in cubilibus vestris! 6 μὴ κλαίετε δάκρυσιν μηδὲ δακρυέτωσαν ἐπὶ τούτοις οὐ γὰρ ἀπώσεται ὀνείδη 7 ὁ λέγων οἶκος Ιακωβ παρώργισεν πνεῦμα κυρίου εἰ ταῦτα τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα αὐτοῦ ἐστιν οὐχ οἱ λόγοι αὐτοῦ εἰσιν καλοὶ με{T'} αὐτοῦ καὶ ὀρθοὶ πεπόρευνται 8 καὶ ἔμπροσθεν ὁ λαός μου εἰς ἔχθραν ἀντέστη κατέναντι τῆς εἰρήνης αὐτοῦ τὴν δορὰν αὐτοῦ ἐξέδειραν τοῦ ἀφελέσθαι ἐλπίδα συντριμμὸν πολέμου 9 διὰ τοῦτο ἡγούμενοι λαοῦ μου ἀπορριφήσονται ἐκ τῶν οἰκιῶν τρυφῆς αὐτῶν διὰ τὰ πονηρὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα αὐτῶν ἐξώσθησαν ἐγγίσατε ὄρεσιν αἰωνίοις 10 ἀνάστηθι καὶ πορεύου ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν σοι αὕτη ἡ ἀνάπαυσις ἕνεκεν ἀκαθαρσίας διεφθάρητε φθορᾷ | 6 Prophets, leave your prophesying; word of prophecy is never for such as these, never may shame overtake them.[2] 7 What, cry they of Jacob, is the Lord so easily offended? Are his designs indeed so unfavourable? Nay, certain it is, if a man will follow the straight path, award of mine shall prosper him; 8 but what of you? Has not this people of mine long counted you enemies, rising up to arraign you? Robbers, that will have cloak and coat both; what marvel if simple folk are up in arms against you? 9 My people! And you would dispossess its women of the homes they loved, take away from its children … my glory for ever.[3] 10 Do you, in your turn, rise up and go your ways; no resting-place shall you have here; corruption most foul the guilt of this land shall breed in it. | 6 Ne loquamini loquentes; non stillabit super istos, non comprehendet confusio. Dicit domus Jacob: Numquid abbreviatus est spiritus Domini, aut tales sunt cogitationes ejus? nonne verba mea bona sunt cum eo qui recte graditur? et e contrario populus meus in adversarium consurrexit. Desuper tunica pallium sustulistis: et eos qui transibant simpliciter convertistis in bellum. 11 κατεδιώχθητε οὐδενὸς διώκοντος πνεῦμα ἔστησεν ψεῦδος ἐστάλαξέν σοι εἰς οἶνον καὶ μέθυσμα καὶ ἔσται ἐκ τῆς σταγόνος τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου 12 συναγόμενος συναχθήσεται Ιακωβ σὺν πᾶσιν ἐκδεχόμενος ἐκδέξομαι τοὺς καταλοίπους τοῦ Ισραηλ ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ θήσομαι τὴν ἀποστροφὴν αὐτῶν ὡς πρόβατα ἐν θλίψει ὡς ποίμνιον ἐν μέσῳ κοίτης αὐτῶν ἐξαλοῦνται ἐξ ἀνθρώπων 13 διὰ τῆς διακοπῆς πρὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν διέκοψαν καὶ διῆλθον πύλην καὶ ἐξῆλθον δ{I'} αὐτῆς καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ βασιλεὺς αὐτῶν πρὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν ὁ δὲ κύριος ἡγήσεται αὐτῶν | 11 Alas, that I should be one beckoned by the spirit, and not rather some forger of lies! Wine and revel to inspire him, he might prophesy, and a people such as this take him for an oracle: 12 Trust me, Jacob, I mean to assemble thee in full strength, rally all that is left of Israel in one place, thronging like sheep in fold, like herd in byre, hum of voices echoing all around; 13 where the breach has been made ready for them, break they out and pass on their way, sally forth with a king to lead them, with the Lord at their head![4] | 11 Utinam non essem vir habens spiritum, et mendacium potius loquerer! [1] Literally, ‘thou shalt not have a man to throw a rope’. It is difficult to see what is the singular subject addressed as ‘thou’, unless it be the clan mentioned in verse 3, though indeed we might have expected a feminine preposition to follow it.
[2] Verses 6-11 are very obscure, and some critics think the text has suffered from considerable faults of copying. Verse 6 begins, in the Hebrew text, ‘Do not prophesy, they will prophesy, they will not prophesy to these’, and in the Latin version, ‘Do not speak speaking, it will not drip upon these’.
[3] It seems difficult to believe that the text has not suffered here, either by corruption or by omission.
[4] Verses 11-13 are usually printed as if a fresh paragraph began with verse 12. But verses 12 and 13, in that case, wholly interrupt the run of the passage, and the note of encouragement is particularly out of place here. The rendering given above assumes that verses 12 and 13 are the utterance of the imaginary false prophet, verse 1 of the next chapter being the message which Michaeas, as a true prophet, is forced to deliver. It is doubtful whether there is any reference here to a return from exile; the situation envisaged seems rather to be a sortie from a besieged stronghold (cf. IV Kg. 25.4).
