1 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων 2 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου ἐπίστρεψον τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἐ{P'} ὄρος Σηιρ καὶ προφήτευσον ἐ{P'} αὐτὸ 3 καὶ εἰπόν τάδε λέγει κύριος κύριος ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐπὶ σέ ὄρος Σηιρ καὶ ἐκτενῶ τὴν χεῖρά μου ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ δώσω σε ἔρημον καὶ ἐρημωθήσῃ 4 καὶ ταῖς πόλεσίν σου ἐρημίαν ποιήσω καὶ σὺ ἔρημος ἔσῃ καὶ γνώσῃ ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος 5 ἀντὶ τοῦ γενέσθαι σε ἐχθρὰν αἰωνίαν καὶ ἐνεκάθισας τῷ οἴκῳ Ισραηλ δόλῳ ἐν χειρὶ ἐχθρῶν μαχαίρᾳ ἐν καιρῷ ἀδικίας ἐ{P'} ἐσχάτῳ 6 διὰ τοῦτο ζῶ ἐγώ λέγει κύριος κύριος εἰ μὴν εἰς αἷμα ἥμαρτες καὶ αἷμά σε διώξεται 7 καὶ δώσω τὸ ὄρος Σηιρ εἰς ἔρημον καὶ ἠρημωμένον καὶ ἀπολῶ ἀ{P'} αὐτοῦ ἀνθρώπους καὶ κτήνη 8 καὶ ἐμπλήσω τῶν τραυματιῶν σου τοὺς βουνοὺς καὶ τὰς φάραγγάς σου καὶ ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς πεδίοις σου τετραυματισμένοι μαχαίρᾳ πεσοῦνται ἐν σοί 9 ἐρημίαν αἰώνιον θήσομαί σε καὶ αἱ πόλεις σου οὐ μὴ κατοικηθῶσιν ἔτι καὶ γνώσῃ ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος 10 διὰ τὸ εἰπεῖν σε τὰ δύο ἔθνη καὶ αἱ δύο χῶραι ἐμαὶ ἔσονται καὶ κληρονομήσω αὐτάς καὶ κύριος ἐκεῖ ἐστιν 11 διὰ τοῦτο ζῶ ἐγώ λέγει κύριος καὶ ποιήσω σοι κατὰ τὴν ἔχθραν σου καὶ γνωσθήσομαί σοι ἡνίκα ἂν κρίνω σε 12 καὶ γνώσῃ ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος ἤκουσα τῆς φωνῆς τῶν βλασφημιῶν σου ὅτι εἶπας τὰ ὄρη Ισραηλ ἔρημα ἡμῖν δέδοται εἰς κατάβρωμα 13 καὶ ἐμεγαλορημόνησας ἐ{P'} ἐμὲ τῷ στόματί σου ἐγὼ ἤκουσα 14 τάδε λέγει κύριος ἐν τῇ εὐφροσύνῃ πάσης τῆς γῆς ἔρημον ποιήσω σε 15 ἔρημον ἔσῃ ὄρος Σηιρ καὶ πᾶσα ἡ Ιδουμαία ἐξαναλωθήσεται καὶ γνώσῃ ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος ὁ θεὸς αὐτῶν | 1 Word came to me from the Lord: 2 Son of man, turn thy regard towards the hill-country of Seir, and prophesy its doom. 3 This be thy message from the Lord God: Have at thee, Seir! My hand is raised to smite thee; desert thou shalt be and desolate; 4 when I have pulled down thy cities and left thee in ruins, thou shalt know my power at last. 5 Relentless foe, didst thou not cut off Israel’s retreat in its most need, when doom closed round it? 6 As I am a living God, the Lord says, to bloodshed I doom thee, bloodshed shall hunt thee down, the very bloodshed that liked thee so little.[1] 7 Desolate and desert mount Seir shall be, none come and go there, 8 every crest of it piled high with the slain. Slain they shall fall, thy warriors, by hill-slope and valley and ravine, 9 till thou art left solitary for all time, thy cities uninhabited; so thou shalt witness my power. 10 Two nations and two countries (thy boast was), and both are mine;[2] to me is left the enjoyment of them! forgetting that I, the Lord, dwell there. 11 As I am a living God, the Lord says, the rankling grudge that embittered thee thou shalt feel to thy cost; by the doom I execute upon thee, Israel shall learn to know me better; 12 and thou too shalt learn that I, the Lord, was listening, when thy arrogance claimed its deserted hill-country for thy prey. 13 I was listening to all those defiant blasphemies of thine, 14 and now, says the Lord God, let all the world rejoice as it will, thou shalt lie desolate. 15 Ruined utterly they shall be, mount Seir and all Edom, that triumphed in the ruin of Israel; the Lord’s power shall be made known at last. | 1 Et factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens: 2 Fili hominis, pone faciem tuam adversum montem Seir, et prophetabis de eo, et dices illi: 3 Hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Ecce ego ad te, mons Seir: et extendam manum meam super te, et dabo te desolatum atque desertum. Eo quod dixeris: Duæ gentes et duæ terræ meæ erunt, et hæreditate possidebo eas, cum Dominus esset ibi: propterea vivo ego, dicit Dominus Deus, quia faciam juxta iram tuam, et secundum zelum tuum, quem fecisti odio habens eos: et notus efficiar per eos, cum te judicavero. Et scies quia ego Dominus audivi universa opprobria tua quæ locutus es de montibus Israël, dicens: Deserti; nobis ad devorandum dati sunt. Et insurrexistis super me ore vestro, et derogastis adversum me verba vestra: ego audivi. Hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Lætante universa terra, in solitudinem te redigam: sicuti gavisus es super hæreditatem domus Israël eo quod fuerit dissipata, sic faciam tibi: dissipatus eris, mons Seir, et Idumæa omnis: et scient quia ego Dominus. |
[1] Literally, ‘I have created thee (or appointed thee; in the Latin, I will hand thee over) to blood, and blood shall pursue thee; I swear that thou hast hated blood, and blood shall pursue thee’. The word ‘blood’ is not used in the Hebrew in the sense of ‘kinship’; and it is not easy to see why the Edomites are rebuked for ‘hating blood’, unless possibly in the sense that they closed their frontiers at the time of Juda’s defeat, to keep the war out of their own territory. But there is reason to suspect that the text is corrupt.
[2] The ‘two nations and two countries’ are usually identified as Israel and Juda. But it may be questioned whether the reference is not to Israel (generally) and Edom; cf. Gen. 25.23.
