1 εἴπατε τῷ ἀδελφῷ ὑμῶν Λαό{S-}μου καὶ τῇ ἀδελφῇ ὑμῶν Ἠλεημένη 2 κρίθητε πρὸς τὴν μητέρα ὑμῶν κρίθητε ὅτι αὐτὴ οὐ γυνή μου καὶ ἐγὼ οὐκ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς καὶ ἐξαρῶ τὴν πορνείαν αὐτῆς ἐκ προσώπου μου καὶ τὴν μοιχείαν αὐτῆς ἐκ μέσου μαστῶν αὐτῆς 3 ὅπως ἂν ἐκδύσω αὐτὴν γυμνὴν καὶ ἀποκαταστήσω αὐτὴν καθὼς ἡμέρᾳ γενέσεως αὐτῆς καὶ θήσομαι αὐτὴν ὡς ἔρημον καὶ τάξω αὐτὴν ὡς γῆν ἄνυδρον καὶ ἀποκτενῶ αὐτὴν ἐν δίψει 4 καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτῆς οὐ μὴ ἐλεήσω ὅτι τέκνα πορνείας ἐστίν | 1 God’s-folk and Befriended, these are the names they should have by rights, brother and sister of yours. 2 Blame her, blame your mother, that she is no true wife of mine, nor I any longer her Lord. Must she still flaunt the harlot’s face of her, the wantonness of her breasts? 3 Must I strip her, leave her naked as babe new-born, leave her desolate as the barren waste, the trackless desert, to die of thirst? 4 Those children of hers, must I needs leave them unpitied, the children of her shame? |
5 ὅτι ἐξεπόρνευσεν ἡ μήτηρ αὐτῶν κατῄσχυνεν ἡ τεκοῦσα αὐτά εἶπεν γάρ ἀκολουθήσω ὀπίσω τῶν ἐραστῶν μου τῶν διδόντων μοι τοὺς ἄρτους μου καὶ τὸ ὕδωρ μου καὶ τὰ ἱμάτιά μου καὶ τὰ ὀθόνιά μου καὶ τὸ ἔλαιόν μου καὶ πάντα ὅσα μοι καθήκει 6 διὰ τοῦτο ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ φράσσω τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτῆς ἐν σκόλοψιν καὶ ἀνοικοδομήσω τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῆς καὶ τὴν τρίβον αὐτῆς οὐ μὴ εὕρῃ 7 καὶ καταδιώξεται τοὺς ἐραστὰς αὐτῆς καὶ οὐ μὴ καταλάβῃ αὐτούς καὶ ζητήσει αὐτοὺς καὶ οὐ μὴ εὕρῃ αὐτούς καὶ ἐρεῖ πορεύσομαι καὶ ἐπιστρέψω πρὸς τὸν ἄνδρα μου τὸν πρότερον ὅτι καλῶς μοι ἦν τότε ἢ νῦν | 5 Harlot mother of theirs brought reproach on the womb that bore them; Haste I away, she said, to those gallants of mine, the gods of whose gift bread comes to me, and water, wool and flax, oil and wine! 6 See if I do not hedge her way about with thorns, fence in her prospect, till way she can find none! 7 Then, it may be, when her gallants she courts in vain, searches for them in vain, she will have other thoughts: Back go I to the husband that was mine once; things were better with me in days gone by.
9 And now I mean to revoke the gift; no harvest for her, no vintage; I will give wool and flax a holiday, that once laboured to cover her shame; 10 no gallant of hers but shall see and mock at it; such is my will, and none shall thwart me. 11 Gone the days of rejoicing, the days of solemnity; gone is new moon, and sabbath, and festival; 12 vine and fig-tree blighted, whose fruit, she told herself, was but the hire those lovers paid; all shall be woodland, for the wild beasts to ravage as they will. 13 Penance she must do for that hey-day of idolatry, when the incense smoked, and out she went, all rings and necklaces, to meet her lovers, the gods of the country-side, and for me, the Lord says, never a thought! |
14 διὰ τοῦτο ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ πλανῶ αὐτὴν καὶ τάξω αὐτὴν εἰς ἔρημον καὶ λαλήσω ἐπὶ τὴν καρδίαν αὐτῆς 15 καὶ δώσω αὐτῇ τὰ κτήματα αὐτῆς ἐκεῖθεν καὶ τὴν κοιλάδα Αχωρ διανοῖξαι σύνεσιν αὐτῆς καὶ ταπεινωθήσεται ἐκεῖ κατὰ τὰς ἡμέρας νηπιότητος αὐτῆς καὶ κατὰ τὰς ἡμέρας ἀναβάσεως αὐτῆς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου 16 καὶ ἔσται ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ λέγει κύριος καλέσει με ὁ ἀνήρ μου καὶ οὐ καλέσει με ἔτι Βααλιμ 17 καὶ ἐξαρῶ τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν Βααλιμ ἐκ στόματος αὐτῆς καὶ οὐ μὴ μνησθῶσιν οὐκέτι τὰ ὀνόματα αὐτῶν 18 καὶ διαθήσομαι αὐτοῖς ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ διαθήκην μετὰ τῶν θηρίων τοῦ ἀγροῦ καὶ μετὰ τῶν πετεινῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ μετὰ τῶν ἑρπετῶν τῆς γῆς καὶ τόξον καὶ ῥομφαίαν καὶ πόλεμον συντρίψω ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ κατοικιῶ σε ἐ{P'} ἐλπίδι | 14 It is but love’s stratagem, thus to lead her out into the wilderness; once there, it shall be all words of comfort. 15 Clad in vineyards that wilderness shall be, that vale of sad memory[1] a passage-way of hope; and a song shall be on her lips, the very music of her youth, when I rescued her from Egypt long ago. 16 Husband she calls me now, the Lord says, Master no longer; 17 that name I stifle on her lips; master-gods of the country-side must all be forgotten.[2] 18 Beast and bird and creeping thing to peace pledge I; bow and sword and war’s alarms break I; all shall sleep safe abed, the folk that dwell in her. |
19 καὶ μνηστεύσομαί σε ἐμαυτῷ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ μνηστεύσομαί σε ἐμαυτῷ ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ ἐν κρίματι καὶ ἐν ἐλέει καὶ ἐν οἰκτιρμοῖς 20 καὶ μνηστεύσομαί σε ἐμαυτῷ ἐν πίστει καὶ ἐπιγνώσῃ τὸν κύριον 21 καὶ ἔσται ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ λέγει κύριος ἐπακούσομαι τῷ οὐρανῷ καὶ ὁ οὐρανὸς ἐπακούσεται τῇ γῇ 22 καὶ ἡ γῆ ἐπακούσεται τὸν σῖτον καὶ τὸν οἶνον καὶ τὸ ἔλαιον καὶ αὐτὰ ἐπακούσεται τῷ Ιεζραελ 23 καὶ σπερῶ αὐτὴν ἐμαυτῷ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ἐλεήσω τὴν Οὐ{K-}ἠλεημένην 24 καὶ ἐρῶ τῷ Ο{U)-}λα{W=|-}μου λαός μου εἶ σύ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐρεῖ κύριος ὁ θεός μου εἶ σύ | 19 Everlastingly I will betroth thee to myself, favour and redress and mercy of mine thy dowry; 20 by the keeping of his troth thou shalt learn to know the Lord. 21 When that day comes, heaven shall win answer, the Lord says, answer from me; and from heaven, earth; 22 and from earth, the corn and wine and oil it nourishes; and from these, the people of my sowing.[3] 23 Deep, deep I will sow them in the land I love; a friend, now, to her that was Unbefriended; 24 to a people that was none of mine I will say, Thou art my people, and they to me, Thou art my God. | 19 Et sponsabo te mihi in sempiternum; et sponsabo te mihi in justitia, et judicio, et in misericordia, et in miserationibus. Et sponsabo te mihi in fide; et scies quia ego Dominus. Et erit in die illa: exaudiam, dicit Dominus, exaudiam cælos, et illi exaudient terram. Et terra exaudiet triticum, et vinum, et oleum, et hæc exaudient Jezrahel. Et seminabo eam mihi in terra, et miserebor ejus quæ fuit Absque misericordia. Et dicam Non populo meo: Populus meus es tu; et ipse dicet: Deus meus es tu. |
[1] Literally, ‘the vale of Achor’, see Jos. 7.26. It may be, however, that no historical allusion is intended; the valley in question is mentioned by Isaias (65.10) in a quite general context.
[2] A Hebrew wife would address her husband as her ba’al, i.e. ‘proprietor’; the same word was used for those proprietary gods who were supposed to control the harvest, the vintage, etc.
[3] ‘The people of my sowing’; literally, ‘Jezrahel’ (i.e. God has sown). It seems clear that the word, an echo of the foregoing chapter, is used here as a kind of cipher-word for ‘Israel’.
