| 1 ὁ συντηρῶν νόμον πλεονάζει προσφοράς 2 θυσιάζων σωτηρίου ὁ προσέχων ἐντολαῖς 3 4 ἀνταποδιδοὺς χάριν προσφέρων σεμίδαλιν καὶ ὁ ποιῶν ἐλεημοσύνην θυσιάζων αἰνέσεως 5 εὐδοκία κυρίου ἀποστῆναι ἀπὸ πονηρίας καὶ ἐξιλασμὸς ἀποστῆναι ἀπὸ ἀδικίας | 1 Live true to the law, and thou hast richly endowed the altar. 2 Let this be thy welcome-offering, to heed God’s word and keep clear of all wickedness; 3 this thy sacrifice of amends for wrong done, of atonement for fault, to shun wrong-doing. 4 Bloodless offering wouldst thou make, give thanks;[1] victim wouldst thou immolate, shew mercy. 5 Wickedness and wrong-doing to shun is to win God’s favour, and pardon for thy faults. | 1 Qui conservat legem multiplicat oblationem. | 6 μὴ ὀφθῇς ἐν προσώπῳ κυρίου κενός 7 πάντα γὰρ ταῦτα χάριν ἐντολῆς 8 προσφορὰ δικαίου λιπαίνει θυσιαστήριον καὶ ἡ εὐωδία αὐτῆς ἔναντι ὑψίστου 9 θυσία ἀνδρὸς δικαίου δεκτή καὶ τὸ μνημόσυνον αὐτῆς οὐκ ἐπιλησθήσεται 10 ἐν ἀγαθῷ ὀφθαλμῷ δόξασον τὸν κύριον καὶ μὴ σμικρύνῃς ἀπαρχὴν χειρῶν σου 11 ἐν πάσῃ δόσει ἱλάρωσον τὸ πρόσωπόν σου καὶ ἐν εὐφροσύνῃ ἁγίασον δεκάτην 12 δὸς ὑψίστῳ κατὰ τὴν δόσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν ἀγαθῷ ὀφθαλμῷ κα{Q'} εὕρεμα χειρός 13 ὅτι κύριος ἀνταποδιδούς ἐστιν καὶ ἑπταπλάσια ἀνταποδώσει σοι | 6 Yet do not appear in the Lord’s presence empty-handed; 7 due observance must be paid, because God has commanded it. 8 If thy heart is right, thy offering shall enrich the altar; its fragrance shall reach the presence of the most High; 9 a just man’s sacrifice the Lord accepts, and will not pass over his claim to be remembered. 10 Generously pay the Lord his due; do not grudge him the first-fruits of thy earnings; 11 all thou givest, give with a smiling face, gladly bring in the tithe. 12 In his own measure God’s gift repay; grudge thou must not what afford thou canst; 13 the Lord is a good master, and thou shalt have sevenfold in return. | 6 Non apparebis ante conspectum Domini vacuus: hæc enim omnia propter mandatum Dei fiunt. | 14 μὴ δωροκόπει οὐ γὰρ προσδέξεται 15 καὶ μὴ ἔπεχε θυσίᾳ ἀδίκῳ ὅτι κύριος κριτής ἐστιν καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν πα{R'} αὐτῷ δόξα προσώπου 16 οὐ λήμψεται πρόσωπον ἐπὶ πτωχοῦ καὶ δέησιν ἠδικημένου εἰσακούσεται 17 οὐ μὴ ὑπερίδῃ ἱκετείαν ὀρφανοῦ καὶ χήραν ἐὰν ἐκχέῃ λαλιάν 18 οὐχὶ δάκρυα χήρας ἐπὶ σιαγόνα καταβαίνει καὶ ἡ καταβόησις ἐπὶ τῷ καταγαγόντι αὐτά 19 20 θεραπεύων ἐν εὐδοκίᾳ δεχθήσεται καὶ ἡ δέησις αὐτοῦ ἕως νεφελῶν συνάψει 21 προσευχὴ ταπεινοῦ νεφέλας διῆλθεν καὶ ἕως συνεγγίσῃ οὐ μὴ παρακληθῇ καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποστῇ ἕως ἐπισκέψηται ὁ ὕψιστος καὶ κρινεῖ δικαίοις καὶ ποιήσει κρίσιν | 14 But think not to bribe his justice; he will have none of thy bribery. 15 Never pin thy hopes on the power of wealth ill gotten; the Lord is a true judge, not swayed by partiality, 16 and thou canst not win him to take thy part against the friendless, turn him deaf to the plea of the wronged. 17 Prayer of the orphan, eloquent sigh of the widow, he will not disregard; 18 see the tears on yonder widow’s cheeks, that accuse the author of her misery! 19 From her cheeks they rise to heaven, where all prayers are heard, a grievous sight. 20 None but his true worshippers he makes welcome; for their supplication the clouds give passage. 21 Pierce those clouds if thou wouldst, thou must humble thyself, inconsolable till that prayer finds audience, unwearying till it wins redress. | 14 Noli offerre munera prava, non enim suscipiet illa. | 22 καὶ ὁ κύριος οὐ μὴ βραδύνῃ οὐδὲ μὴ μακροθυμήσῃ ἐ{P'} αὐτοῖς ἕως ἂν συντρίψῃ ὀσφὺν ἀνελεημόνων 23 καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἀνταποδώσει ἐκδίκησιν ἕως ἐξάρῃ πλῆθος ὑβριστῶν καὶ σκῆπτρα ἀδίκων συντρίψει 24 ἕως ἀνταποδῷ ἀνθρώπῳ κατὰ τὰς πράξεις αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ἔργα τῶν ἀνθρώπων κατὰ τὰ ἐνθυμήματα αὐτῶν 25 ἕως κρίνῃ τὴν κρίσιν τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ εὐφρανεῖ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ ἐλέει αὐτοῦ 26 ὡραῖον ἔλεος ἐν καιρῷ θλίψεως αὐτοῦ ὡς νεφέλαι ὑετοῦ ἐν καιρῷ ἀβροχίας | 22 And will the Lord keep us waiting long? Hearing and redress he will grant to the innocent; strong as of old, patient no longer, he will crush the backs of our oppressors. 23 The Gentiles punished, scattered the hordes of insolence, broken the sceptre of wrong! 24 Men called to account everywhere for their deeds, the harvest of their mortal pride, 25 and his own people vindicated at last, triumphing in his mercy at last! 26 God’s mercy, welcome to the afflicted as rain-clouds are welcome in time of drought! | 22 Et Dominus non elongabit: et judicabit justos, et faciet judicium: et Fortissimus non habebit in illis patientiam, ut contribulet dorsum ipsorum: et gentibus reddet vindictam, donec tollat plenitudinem superborum, et sceptra iniquorum contribulet: donec reddat hominibus secundum actus suos, et secundum opera Adæ, et secundum præsumptionem illius: donec judicet judicium plebis suæ, et oblectabit justos misericordia sua. [1] This would more naturally be rendered from the Latin, ‘If thou wouldst give thanks, make a bloodless offering’, but the context seems to indicate that this is a misinterpretation of the Greek.
