| 1 τοῦ ἔτους οὗ εἰσῆλθεν Ταναθαν εἰς Ἄζωτον ἡνίκα ἀπεστάλη ὑπὸ Αρνα βασιλέως Ἀσσυρίων καὶ ἐπολέμησεν τὴν Ἄζωτον καὶ κατελάβετο αὐτήν 2 τότε ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Ησαιαν λέγων πορεύου καὶ ἄφελε τὸν σάκκον ἀπὸ τῆς ὀσφύος σου καὶ τὰ σανδάλιά σου ὑπόλυσαι ἀπὸ τῶν ποδῶν σου καὶ ἐποίησεν οὕτως πορευόμενος γυμνὸς καὶ ἀνυπόδετος 3 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος ὃν τρόπον πεπόρευται Ησαιας ὁ παῖς μου γυμνὸς καὶ ἀνυπόδετος τρία ἔτη ἔσται σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα τοῖς Αἰγυπτίοις καὶ Αἰθίοψιν 4 ὅτι οὕτως ἄξει βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν Αἰγύπτου καὶ Αἰθιόπων νεανίσκους καὶ πρεσβύτας γυμνοὺς καὶ ἀνυποδέτους ἀνακεκαλυμμένους τὴν αἰσχύνην Αἰγύπτου 5 καὶ αἰσχυνθήσονται ἡττηθέντες οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι ἐπὶ τοῖς Αἰθίοψιν ἐ{F'} οἷς ἦσαν πεποιθότες οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι ἦσαν γὰρ αὐτοῖς δόξα 6 καὶ ἐροῦσιν οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν τῇ νήσῳ ταύτῃ ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς ἦμεν πεποιθότες τοῦ φυγεῖν εἰς αὐτοὺς εἰς βοήθειαν οἳ οὐκ ἐδύναντο σωθῆναι ἀπὸ βασιλέως Ἀσσυρίων καὶ πῶς ἡμεῖς σωθησόμεθα | 1 It was in the year when Tharthan, at the bidding of king Sargon of Assyria, inva-ded the territory of Azotus, and captured it by assault, 2 that the Lord sent out a message through Isaias, son of Amos. Up, said he, and undo the sackcloth that girds thee, and take off thy shoes. This Isaias did, and went bare and unshod. 3 Whereupon the Lord said, Look, how my servant Isaias goes bare and unshod; that is a sign and a portent of what must come upon Egypt and Ethiopia when three years are past.[1] 4 It is thus that the king of Assyria will lead away the prisoners he takes in Egypt, the exiles from Ethiopia, young and old alike. Bare and unshod they shall go, with their buttocks exposed, to the shame of Egypt. 5 A time of dismay and confusion for those who put their trust in Ethiopia, who boasted of Egypt’s power! 6 Dwellers in this nook of earth, they will cry out, Here lay all our hope; these were to be our protectors, and bring us deliverance when the king of Assyria came! And what of us? For us no refuge now. | 1 In anno quo ingressus est Thathan in Azotum, cum misisset eum Sargon, rex Assyriorum, et pugnasset contra Azotum, et cepisset eam: 2 in tempore illo locutus est Dominus in manu Isaiæ, filii Amos, dicens: Vade, et solve saccum de lumbis tuis, et calceamenta tua tolle de pedibus tuis. Et fecit sic, vadens nudus et discalceatus. 3 Et dixit Dominus: Sicut ambulavit servus meus Isaias nudus et discalceatus, trium annorum signum et portentum erit super Ægyptum et super Æthiopiam; sic minabit rex Assyriorum captivitatem Ægypti, et transmigrationem Æthiopiæ, juvenum et senum, nudam et discalceatam, discoopertis natibus, ad ignominiam Ægypti. Et timebunt, et confundentur ab Æthiopia spe sua, et ab Ægypto gloria sua. Et dicet habitator insulæ hujus in die illa: Ecce hæc erat spes nostra, ad quos confugimus in auxilium, ut liberarent nos a facie regis Assyriorum: et quomodo effugere poterimus nos? |
[1] Literally, ‘a sign and portent of three years’. It is not clear whether the prophet was ordered to go half-clad and barefoot during all that time.
