 (A maskil. Of Asaph.) Intellectus Asaph.
1 συνέσεως τῷ Ασαφ προσέχετε λαός μου τὸν νόμον μου κλίνατε τὸ οὖς ὑμῶν εἰς τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ στόματός μου 2 ἀνοίξω ἐν παραβολαῖς τὸ στόμα μου φθέγξομαι προβλήματα ἀ{P'} ἀρχῆς 3 ὅσα ἠκούσαμεν καὶ ἔγνωμεν αὐτὰ καὶ οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν διηγήσαντο ἡμῖν 4 οὐκ ἐκρύβη ἀπὸ τῶν τέκνων αὐτῶν εἰς γενεὰν ἑτέραν ἀπαγγέλλοντες τὰς αἰνέσεις τοῦ κυρίου καὶ τὰς δυναστείας αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ θαυμάσια αὐτοῦ ἃ ἐποίησεν 5 καὶ ἀνέστησεν μαρτύριον ἐν Ιακωβ καὶ νόμον ἔθετο ἐν Ισραηλ ὅσα ἐνετείλατο τοῖς πατράσιν ἡμῶν τοῦ γνωρίσαι αὐτὰ τοῖς υἱοῖς αὐτῶν 6 ὅπως ἂν γνῷ γενεὰ ἑτέρα υἱοὶ οἱ τεχθησόμενοι καὶ ἀναστήσονται καὶ ἀπαγγελοῦσιν αὐτὰ τοῖς υἱοῖς αὐτῶν 7 ἵνα θῶνται ἐπὶ τὸν θεὸν τὴν ἐλπίδα αὐτῶν καὶ μὴ ἐπιλάθωνται τῶν ἔργων τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ ἐκζητήσουσιν 8 ἵνα μὴ γένωνται ὡς οἱ πατέρες αὐτῶν γενεὰ σκολιὰ καὶ παραπικραίνουσα γενεά ἥτις οὐ κατηύθυνεν τὴν καρδίαν αὐτῆς καὶ οὐκ ἐπιστώθη μετὰ τοῦ θεοῦ τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτῆς 1 Listen, my people, to this testament of mine, do not turn a deaf ear to the words I utter; 2 I speak to you with mysteries for my theme, read the riddles of long ago. 3 It is a story often heard, well known among us; have not our fathers told it to us? 4 And shall we keep it back from their children, from the generation which follows? Speak we of God’s praise, of his great power, of the wonderful deeds he did. 5 He gave Jacob a rule to live by, framed for Israel a law, commanding our fathers to hand on the message, 6 so that a new generation might learn it; sons would be born to take their place, and teach it to their own sons after them. 7 They were to put their trust in God, ever remembering his divine dealings with them, ever loyal to his commands; 8 they were not to be like their fathers, a stubborn and defiant breed, a generation of false aims, of a spirit that broke faith with God. 1 Attendite, popule meus, legem meam;
inclinate aurem vestram in verba oris mei.
2
Aperiam in parabolis os meum;
loquar propositiones ab initio.
3
Quanta audivimus, et cognovimus ea,
et patres nostri narraverunt nobis.
4
Non sunt occultata a filiis eorum in generatione altera,
narrantes laudes Domini et virtutes ejus,
et mirabilia ejus quæ fecit.
5
Et suscitavit testimonium in Jacob,
et legem posuit in Israël,
quanta mandavit patribus nostris
nota facere ea filiis suis:
6
ut cognoscat generatio altera:
filii qui nascentur et exsurgent,
et narrabunt filiis suis,
7
ut ponant in Deo spem suam,
et non obliviscantur operum Dei,
et mandata ejus exquirant:
8
ne fiant, sicut patres eorum,
generatio prava et exasperans;
10 They were false to God’s covenant, refused to follow his law, 11 as if they had forgotten all his mercies, all those wonderful deeds of his they had witnessed. 12 Had not their fathers seen wonders enough in Egypt, on the plains of Tanis, 13 when he parted the sea to let them pass through it, making its waters stand firm as a mound of earth; 14 when he led them with a cloud by day, with glowing fire all through the night? 15 He pierced the rock, too, in the desert, and slaked their thirst as if from some deep pool, 16 bidding the very stones yield water, till fountains gushed from them, abundant as rivers. 9
Filii Ephrem, intendentes et mittentes arcum,
conversi sunt in die belli.
10
Non custodierunt testamentum Dei,
et in lege ejus noluerunt ambulare.
11
Et obliti sunt benefactorum ejus,
et mirabilium ejus quæ ostendit eis.
12
Coram patribus eorum fecit mirabilia
in terra Ægypti, in campo Taneos.
13
Interrupit mare, et perduxit eos,
et statuit aquas quasi in utre:
14
et deduxit eos in nube diei,
et tota nocte in illuminatione ignis.
15
Interrupit petram in eremo,
et adaquavit eos velut in abysso multa.
16
Et eduxit aquam de petra,
et deduxit tamquam flumina aquas.
19 Defiantly they asked, Can God spread a table for us in the wilderness? 20 True, he smote the rock, and made water flow from it, till the stream ran in flood, but can he give bread too, and provide meat for his people? 21 All this the Lord heard, and his indignation blazed out; its mounting fires Jacob had fed, its fury must break on Israel. 22 What, had they no faith in God, no trust in his power to save? 23 He laid his command upon the clouds above them, threw open the doors of heaven, 24 and rained down manna for them to eat. The bread of heaven was his gift to them; 25 man should eat the food of angels,[2] and so their want should be supplied abundantly. 26 Next, he summoned his east wind from the sky: it was his power brought the southern gale, 27 raining down meat on them thick as dust, birds on the wing, plentiful as the sea-sand. 28 Into their very camp it fell, close about their tents; 29 and they ate, and took their fill. All they asked, he granted them; 30 and now, their craving still unsatisfied, while the food was yet in their mouths, 31 God’s anger against them reached its height, and slew their lordliest, brought them low, all the flower of Israel. 17
Et apposuerunt adhuc peccare ei;
in iram excitaverunt Excelsum in inaquoso.
18
Et tentaverunt Deum in cordibus suis,
ut peterent escas animabus suis.
19
Et male locuti sunt de Deo;
dixerunt: Numquid poterit Deus parare mensam in deserto?
20
quoniam percussit petram, et fluxerunt aquæ,
et torrentes inundaverunt.
Numquid et panem poterit dare,
aut parare mensam populo suo?
21
Ideo audivit Dominus et distulit;
et ignis accensus est in Jacob,
et ira ascendit in Israël:
22
quia non crediderunt in Deo,
nec speraverunt in salutari ejus.
23
Et mandavit nubibus desuper,
et januas cæli aperuit.
24
Et pluit illis manna ad manducandum,
et panem cæli dedit eis.
25
Panem angelorum manducavit homo;
cibaria misit eis in abundantia.
26
Transtulit austrum de cælo,
et induxit in virtute sua africum.
27
Et pluit super eos sicut pulverem carnes,
et sicut arenam maris volatilia pennata.
28
Et ceciderunt in medio castrorum eorum,
circa tabernacula eorum.
29
Et manducaverunt, et saturati sunt nimis,
et desiderium eorum attulit eis:
30
non sunt fraudati a desiderio suo.
Adhuc escæ eorum erant in ore ipsorum,
31
et ira Dei ascendit super eos:
et occidit pingues eorum,
et electos Israël impedivit.
33 And ever he took away their lives untimely, hurried their days to an end. 34 When he threatened them with death, they would search after him, feel their need of God once more; 35 they would remind themselves that it was God who had protected them, his almighty power that had delivered them. 36 But still they were lying lips, they were false tongues that spoke to him; 37 their hearts were not true to him, no loyalty bound them to his covenant. 38 Yet, such is his mercy, he would still pardon their faults, and spare them from destruction; again and again he curbed his indignation, to his vengeance would not give place. 39 He would not forget that they were flesh and blood, no better than a breath of wind, that passes by and never returns. 40 How often the desert saw them in revolt against him, how often, in those solitudes, they defied his anger! 41 Always new challenges to God’s power, new rebellions against the Holy One of Israel. 32
In omnibus his peccaverunt adhuc,
et non crediderunt in mirabilibus ejus.
33
Et defecerunt in vanitate dies eorum,
et anni eorum cum festinatione.
34
Cum occideret eos, quærebant eum et revertebantur,
et diluculo veniebant ad eum.
35
36
Et dilexerunt eum in ore suo,
et lingua sua mentiti sunt ei;
37
38
Ipse autem est misericors,
et propitius fiet peccatis eorum,
et non disperdet eos.
Et abundavit ut averteret iram suam,
et non accendit omnem iram suam.
39
Et recordatus est quia caro sunt,
spiritus vadens et non rediens.
40
Quoties exacerbaverunt eum in deserto;
in iram concitaverunt eum in inaquoso?
41
Et conversi sunt, et tentaverunt Deum,
et sanctum Israël exacerbaverunt.
42 οὐκ ἐμνήσθησαν τῆς χειρὸς αὐτοῦ ἡμέρας ἧς ἐλυτρώσατο αὐτοὺς ἐκ χειρὸς θλίβοντος 43 ὡς ἔθετο ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ τὰ σημεῖα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ τέρατα αὐτοῦ ἐν πεδίῳ Τάνεως 44 καὶ μετέστρεψεν εἰς αἷμα τοὺς ποταμοὺς αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ ὀμβρήματα αὐτῶν ὅπως μὴ πίωσιν 45 ἐξαπέστειλεν εἰς αὐτοὺς κυνόμυιαν καὶ κατέφαγεν αὐτούς καὶ βάτραχον καὶ διέφθειρεν αὐτούς 46 καὶ ἔδωκεν τῇ ἐρυσίβῃ τὸν καρπὸν αὐτῶν καὶ τοὺς πόνους αὐτῶν τῇ ἀκρίδι 47 ἀπέκτεινεν ἐν χαλάζῃ τὴν ἄμπελον αὐτῶν καὶ τὰς συκαμίνους αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ πάχνῃ 48 καὶ παρέδωκεν εἰς χάλαζαν τὰ κτήνη αὐτῶν καὶ τὴν ὕπαρξιν αὐτῶν τῷ πυρί 49 ἐξαπέστειλεν εἰς αὐτοὺς ὀργὴν θυμοῦ αὐτοῦ θυμὸν καὶ ὀργὴν καὶ θλῖψιν ἀποστολὴν δ{I'} ἀγγέλων πονηρῶν 50 ὡδοποίησεν τρίβον τῇ ὀργῇ αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐφείσατο ἀπὸ θανάτου τῶν ψυχῶν αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ κτήνη αὐτῶν εἰς θάνατον συνέκλεισεν 51 καὶ ἐπάταξεν πᾶν πρωτότοκον ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ ἀπαρχὴν τῶν πόνων αὐτῶν ἐν τοῖς σκηνώμασι Χαμ 52 καὶ ἀπῆρεν ὡς πρόβατα τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀνήγαγεν αὐτοὺς ὡς ποίμνιον ἐν ἐρήμῳ 53 καὶ ὡδήγησεν αὐτοὺς ἐν ἐλπίδι καὶ οὐκ ἐδειλίασαν καὶ τοὺς ἐχθροὺς αὐτῶν ἐκάλυψεν θάλασσα 54 καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτοὺς εἰς ὅριον ἁγιάσματος αὐτοῦ ὄρος τοῦτο ὃ ἐκτήσατο ἡ δεξιὰ αὐτοῦ 55 καὶ ἐξέβαλεν ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν ἔθνη καὶ ἐκληροδότησεν αὐτοὺς ἐν σχοινίῳ κληροδοσίας καὶ κατεσκήνωσεν ἐν τοῖς σκηνώμασιν αὐτῶν τὰς φυλὰς τοῦ Ισραηλ 42 Had they forgotten all he did for them, that day when he set them free from the power of their oppressor, 43 all those miracles among the men of Egypt, those portents in the plain of Tanis, 44 when he turned all their streams, all their channels into blood, so that they could not drink? 45 He sent out flies, to their ruin, frogs to bring devastation on them, 46 gave all their harvest over to the caterpillar, their tillage to the locust, 47 sent hail on their vineyards, frost on their mulberry-trees, 48 let the hail have its way with their cattle, the lightning with their flocks. 49 He let his anger loose on them in all its vehemence; what rage, what fury, what havoc, as the angels of destruction thronged about them! 50 So, the way made ready for his vengeance, he took toll of their lives, doomed even their cattle to the pestilence; 51 on every first-born creature in Egypt, on the first-fruits of increase in all the dwellings of Cham, his stroke fell. 52 Then, like a shepherd, he set his own people on their way, led them, his own flock, through the wilderness; 53 guided them in safety, free from all alarm, while the sea closed over their enemy. 54 So he brought them to that holy land of his, the mountain slopes he took, with his own right hand for title; so he drove out the heathen at their onset, parcelled out the land to them by lot, to each his own inheritance, 55 bidding the tribes of Israel dwell where the heathen had dwelt before them. 42
Non sunt recordati manus ejus,
die qua redemit eos de manu tribulantis:
43
sicut posuit in Ægypto signa sua,
et prodigia sua in campo Taneos;
44
et convertit in sanguinem flumina eorum,
et imbres eorum, ne biberent.
45
Misit in eos cœnomyiam, et comedit eos,
et ranam, et disperdidit eos;
46
et dedit ærugini fructus eorum,
et labores eorum locustæ;
47
et occidit in grandine vineas eorum,
et moros eorum in pruina;
48
et tradidit grandini jumenta eorum,
et possessionem eorum igni;
49
misit in eos iram indignationis suæ,
indignationem, et iram, et tribulationem,
immissiones per angelos malos.
50
Viam fecit semitæ iræ suæ:
non pepercit a morte animabus eorum,
et jumenta eorum in morte conclusit:
51
et percussit omne primogenitum in terra Ægypti;
primitias omnis laboris eorum in tabernaculis Cham:
52
et abstulit sicut oves populum suum,
et perduxit eos tamquam gregem in deserto:
53
54
Et induxit eos in montem sanctificationis suæ,
montem quem acquisivit dextera ejus;
et ejecit a facie eorum gentes,
et sorte divisit eis terram in funiculo distributionis;
55
et habitare fecit in tabernaculis eorum tribus Israël.
56 καὶ ἐπείρασαν καὶ παρεπίκραναν τὸν θεὸν τὸν ὕψιστον καὶ τὰ μαρτύρια αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐφυλάξαντο 57 καὶ ἀπέστρεψαν καὶ ἠσυνθέτησαν καθὼς καὶ οἱ πατέρες αὐτῶν καὶ μετεστράφησαν εἰς τόξον στρεβλὸν 58 καὶ παρώργισαν αὐτὸν ἐν τοῖς βουνοῖς αὐτῶν καὶ ἐν τοῖς γλυπτοῖς αὐτῶν παρεζήλωσαν αὐτόν 59 ἤκουσεν ὁ θεὸς καὶ ὑπερεῖδεν καὶ ἐξουδένωσεν σφόδρα τὸν Ισραηλ 60 καὶ ἀπώσατο τὴν σκηνὴν Σηλωμ σκήνωμα αὐτοῦ οὗ κατεσκήνωσεν ἐν ἀνθρώποις 61 καὶ παρέδωκεν εἰς αἰχμαλωσίαν τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτῶν καὶ τὴν καλλονὴν αὐτῶν εἰς χεῖρας ἐχθροῦ 62 καὶ συνέκλεισεν εἰς ῥομφαίαν τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτοῦ ὑπερεῖδεν 63 τοὺς νεανίσκους αὐτῶν κατέφαγεν πῦρ καὶ αἱ παρθένοι αὐτῶν οὐκ ἐπενθήθησαν 64 οἱ ἱερεῖς αὐτῶν ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ ἔπεσαν καὶ αἱ χῆραι αὐτῶν οὐ κλαυσθήσονται 56 These were the men who defied the most high God, and rebelled against him; would not observe his decrees, 57 but turned away and broke faith with him as their fathers had done, like a bow that plays the archer false; 58 made mountain shrines, to court his anger, carved images, to awake his jealousy! 59 The Lord heard the bruit of it, and burned with anger, cast Israel away in bitter scorn; 60 he forsook his tabernacle in Silo, that tabernacle where once he dwelt among men. 61 Plunder, now, in the enemy’s hands, the ark that is shrine of his strength and majesty; 62 he would leave his people at the mercy of the sword, disdain his own inheritance. 63 Their young men fed the flames, and the maidens must go unwed; 64 their priests fell by the sword, and never a widow left to mourn for them. 56
Et tentaverunt, et exacerbaverunt Deum excelsum,
et testimonia ejus non custodierunt.
57
Et averterunt se, et non servaverunt pactum:
quemadmodum patres eorum, conversi sunt in arcum pravum.
58
In iram concitaverunt eum in collibus suis,
59
Audivit Deus, et sprevit,
et ad nihilum redegit valde Israël.
60
Et repulit tabernaculum Silo,
tabernaculum suum, ubi habitavit in hominibus.
61
Et tradidit in captivitatem virtutem eorum,
et pulchritudinem eorum in manus inimici.
62
Et conclusit in gladio populum suum,
et hæreditatem suam sprevit.
63
Juvenes eorum comedit ignis,
et virgines eorum non sunt lamentatæ.
64
Sacerdotes eorum in gladio ceciderunt,
et viduæ eorum non plorabantur.
65 καὶ ἐξηγέρθη ὡς ὁ ὑπνῶν κύριος ὡς δυνατὸς κεκραιπαληκὼς ἐξ οἴνου 66 καὶ ἐπάταξεν τοὺς ἐχθροὺς αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω ὄνειδος αἰώνιον ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς 67 καὶ ἀπώσατο τὸ σκήνωμα Ιωσηφ καὶ τὴν φυλὴν Εφραιμ οὐκ ἐξελέξατο 68 καὶ ἐξελέξατο τὴν φυλὴν Ιουδα τὸ ὄρος τὸ Σιων ὃ ἠγάπησεν 69 καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν ὡς μονοκερώτων τὸ ἁγίασμα αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ γῇ ἐθεμελίωσεν αὐτὴν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα 70 καὶ ἐξελέξατο Δαυιδ τὸν δοῦλον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀνέλαβεν αὐτὸν ἐκ τῶν ποιμνίων τῶν προβάτων 71 ἐξόπισθεν τῶν λοχευομένων ἔλαβεν αὐτὸν ποιμαίνειν Ιακωβ τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ Ισραηλ τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτοῦ 72 καὶ ἐποίμανεν αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἀκακίᾳ τῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν ταῖς συνέσεσι τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ ὡδήγησεν αὐτούς 65 Then suddenly, like a man that wakes up from sleep, like some warrior that lay, till now, bemused with wine, the Lord roused himself; 66 he smote his enemies as they turned to flee,[3] branded them for ever with shame. 67 But he refused, now, to make his dwelling with Joseph, it was not the tribe of Ephraim he would choose; 68 he chose the tribe of Juda, and the hill of Sion, there to bestow his love. 69 And there he built his sanctuary, immovable as heaven or earth, his own unchanging handiwork. 70 He chose David, too, for his servant; took him away from herding the sheep; bade him leave off following the ewes that were in milk, 71 and be the shepherd of Jacob’s sons, his own people, of Israel, his own domain. 72 His was the loyal heart that should tend them, his the skilful hand that should be their guide. 65
Et excitatus est tamquam dormiens Dominus,
tamquam potens crapulatus a vino.
66
Et percussit inimicos suos in posteriora;
opprobrium sempiternum dedit illis.
67
Et repulit tabernaculum Joseph,
et tribum Ephraim non elegit:
68
sed elegit tribum Juda,
montem Sion, quem dilexit.
69
Et ædificavit sicut unicornium sanctificium suum,
in terra quam fundavit in sæcula.
70
